I covet a set of Rambo XL rugs for him (lightweight, middle weight, heavy weight), but his vet bills proclude me from spending money on much of anything else right now :/
Instead I made a pair of extentions for the front straps. Nylon straps with a bucke in one end, and a D-ring in the other, covered in a red fluffy thingy so they won't rub:
Not perfect, but at least it's wide enough to move in, graze in, and roll in comfortably :D

i like your creative solution, and it looks comfortable for him, even better than the normal closure, he can put his head down without too much pressure on his chest, i think.
he's a really dreamy looking horse, i hope he gets well soon.
